0202 – Points of View from Jerusalem

#0202_A_View_from_West_Jerusalem

“Novy God is coming [1] and it’s wonderful to see all the events taking place around the country next week. For those who have not yet experienced Novy God, this is an excellent opportunity to be inspired and get into the atmosphere!

Tusovka Novy God in Cafe Nocturno [in Jerusalem] –

The meaning of ‘tusovka’ is an informal ‘get-to-know-you’ gathering. ‘The Cultural Brigade’, a group of young people from the former Soviet Union, members of the ‘Generation 1.5’ group [2], are working to transform the story and culture of former Soviet immigrants to become a part of Israeli culture. As part of the “Creators at Night” festival, the Novy God will host artists for a festive evening in the spirit of the Soviet holiday. Between shots, people will share their personal stories describing the experiences of emigration and the Soviet culture with which they grew up.[…]”

0202 Editor’s Notes:
[1] Novy God is the Russian New Year, and refers to the Russian New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day celebrations.
[2] ‘Generation 1.5’ is a group of young people who emigrated to Israel with their families from the former Soviet Union as young children. ‘Generation 1.5’ refers to an academic term used by sociologists to describe the phenomenon of migration of young children, who preserve their cultural background at home and learn to take on a new identity outside of home. Around 1 million people emigrated to Israel from the former Soviet Union in the 1990s, such that Russian Israelis have come to represent a significant sector in Israeli society.
