0202 – Points of View from Jerusalem

#0202_A_View_From_West_Jerusalem

“The Rabbi of the Western Wall claimed that he learned his lesson from the Ferrari incident at the Western Wall… [1] So he claimed.
On the eve of the holiday [2], a convicted sex offender, Rabbi Berland [3] drove right up to the Western Wall in his private car.
The words ‘horrifying’, ‘infuriating’ and ‘humiliating’ cannot even begin to describe our feelings.
A convicted sex offender is treated like a king, and women with a Torah scroll have to stand in line for an hour and a half, and undergo a humiliating physical search to enter the Wall?
Shameful!”

– Women of the Wall [4]

[Selected comment:]
– “Hard to stomach”.

0202 Editor’s Notes:
[1] In May of 2017, Ferrari cars were allowed to park at the Western Wall Plaza. This caused an outcry and was seen by many as disrespectful.
[2] The Passover festival lasts seven days. The first and last day of the festival are treated like a Sabbath where religious Jews refrain from work, driving and use of electricity. This incident occurred the afternoon of the seventh day of Passover.
[3] Rabbi Eliezer Berland is an Israeli rabbi and heads the Shuvu Bonim movement which some consider to be a cult. Following allegations of sexual misconduct, Berland fled Israel. After spending four years on the run, he agreed to return to Israel and turn himself in to the Israeli authorities. He was sentenced to 18 months incarceration for his sexual attacks on two women, as well as his instructions to assault the husband of one of the women he sexually assaulted.
[3] Women of the Wall Nashot HaKotel is an organization that fights for gender equality at the Western Wall, and the rights of non-Orthodox Jewish denominations at the Western Wall.
