0202 – Points of View from Jerusalem

#0202_A_View_From_East_Jerusalem

“The Parents Association for Students Affairs: the Occupation municipality has omitted pages and lessons from the school curriculum of grades 1-10; this includes material from most books, including science, Arabic, social studies, math and Islamic studies.”

– Wadi Hilweh Information Center-Silwan

[Translation of text in photo:]

“After the defeat of 1967, occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, and the Zionist takeover of the rest of Palestine, the Muslim Ummah [1] felt crushed, disappointed and defeated; the Battle of Karameh [2] took place the following year and broke the spirits of the Zionist enemy. This returned to the Ummah some of its pride and confidence.”

0202 Editors’ Notes:
[1] The word ‘ummah’ is an Arabic word meaning “community.” It is commonly used to refer to the collective community of Muslim people all over the world.
[2] The Battle of Karameh was a 15-hour military engagement between Israel and combined forces of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Jordanian Armed Forces in the Jordanian town of Karameh on March 21, 1968. Israel claimed that the purpose of the mission was to destroy the PLO militant camps at Karameh and capture Yasser Arafat as reprisal; however, some say it was also to punish Jordan for its perceived support to Palestinian fighters, known as fedayeen. Israel assumed the Jordanian Army would choose to not get involved in the battle, but the latter deployed heavy artillery fire. The Israelis retreated after the day-long battle.
