Jerusalem Pool Hangs Up Sign Announcing Non-Jewish Lifeguard

"Look at the sign that was hung up at the Zippori Center swimming pool in Jerusalem.
The way the lifeguard’s religion is displayed on the sign is racist and discriminatory, and encourages polarization between Jews and Arabs. How would we react to a pool sign in the US or Europe that would announce a Jewish lifeguard?

Zippori Center Pool’s response:
An employee at the Zippori pool explained the sign in a conversation with N12: ‘We have a gender separate swimming time for Haredi women on Sundays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It is important for this sector to have a female lifeguard. Sometimes the female lifeguard can not come and if that’s the case it is important to Haredi women that the lifeguard is not Jewish. The sign has now been removed from the pool as it may be offensive to a certain sector.’

Shimi Amsalem, director general of the Zippori Center, responded: ‘As soon as I was informed about the sign, I inquired and they explained to me that Haredi women wanted it because they will not go into the water unless there is a female or Arab lifeguard. What's funny is that every day there is an Arab lifeguard who has been working for us for many years on duty. Jews and Arabs are all equal. We took down the sign the moment I heard about it so it would not hurt anyone's feelings.’ "

Translation of Photo:
" Today there’s a non-Jewish lifeguard."
