Haredi Families Fined in Gan Sacher Park in Jerusalem
“Testimonies from Haredim: Intentional harassment from inspectors in Jerusalem.
Is there a deliberate harassment by inspectors in the Jerusalem municipality against the ultra-Orthodox public in the city's parks?
This is apparent from the many testimonies that have been received by Kikar HaShabbat in recent days *
Two different Haredi families, who visited Gan Sacher Park yesterday (Wednesday), reported that it has become a phenomenon that inspectors are specifically watching the Haredi public, and despite the difficult economic situation and the simple desire to go out and breathe a sigh of relief, they ‘take pleasure' in giving them the most fines possible.
'It's an embarassment," said the family members.
'We are a Haredi family with children and we went to relax a bit in Gan Sacher Park, we wanted to have a barbeque and have some fun with the children and release some stress', the family tells Kikar HaShabbat.
‘Of course, if we are with children there is dirt and a mess, but we are decent people, and we planned before we returned home to clean up the mess.’
'And really', added the family, 'When we finished eating we started cleaning up, and while we are cleaning one of the inspectors from the Jerusalem Municipality approached one of the older members of our family and demanded that he present his identity card without any explanation or reason. He immediately gave him a fine for the mess'. Members of the family explained, 'Indeed there was a "mess", but the "mess" was backpacks, items we had brought with us and garbage bags of garbage that we had collected from the area. Everything we explained and showed the inspectors did not work, they immediately reported us.'
Another Jerusalem family tells Kikar HaShabbat: 'We were in Gan Sacher this week, we sat down to eat, in the middle of eating some of the kids got up to play, we automatically moved away a bit, but stayed in the vicinity of where we ate with our other family members and all our belongings. Suddenly, an inspector arrived out of nowhere and photographed our food and leftovers, and demanded to report us. Because we are cultured people we approached the inspector nicely to explain that we had not yet finished eating and were not finished in the area. The inspector rudely replied, "but you wwould have left this all here afterwards." We were in complete shock. All our efforts of explaining the situation to prevent the report did not help. When we asked her why all the other families around us were not receiving reports and we were she answered, "I want to specifically report you, you will not tell me who to report".'
Journalist Ariel El-Harrar tells Kikar HaShabbat that, 'in all the parks in the country there is no enforcement, go to the Tel Aviv promenade in or any other park and you will not see a tenth of the shameful enforcement like it is in Jerusalem."
Kikar HaShabbat was waiting to receive the response from the Jerusalem Municipality but it had not yet been delivered by the time the article was published. When it was received, it had already been published.”
