Arrests at Haredi Protest in Jerusalem
“Third night of Protests in Jerusalem: The Police were Ready in Advance
Hundreds of Haredim participated in a protest tonight [Monday] at the Yirmiyahu- Shamgar intersection in Jerusalem, in response to the lockdown of Romema [1], police violence and the selective enforcement of Corona laws towards the Haredi community by police.
The third night of protests, like the other two nights happened at the location where a policeman had asked a Haredi man why he was not wearing a mask.
The police, unlike yesterday, were prepared for the protest beforehand and took harsh action against those that interrupted the order of things. Last night [Sunday], supposedly because of the public pressure against them, the police did not make any arrests. However tonight, the police decided that after they gained legitimacy they would make arrests and during the last minutes of the protest the first arrest was made.
It was told to Kikar HaShabbat that the first arrest was apparently the twin brother of the boy who was arrested in the Old City by the police and there still remains uncertainty with regards to his arrest.
The protestors reported to Kikar HaShabbat that, ‘We will not surrender nor give up, this is our home and we will not let the Jewish State distinguish between communities. We will take every measure until the closure is lifted, and the police will treat us like human beings.
At 22:00, the police arrested a Haredi demonstrator, who allegedly brought a tray full of fireworks to the demonstration site and attempted to set them off onto the policemen. Half an hour after that, the protest began to be more violent and groups of demonstrators even took down the barriers.
At 23:00 the protest lost all control and the police decided to make quick arrests. Within minutes, the police had over 7 detainees, all of whom had committed serious disturbances.”

0202 Editor’s Notes:
[1] Romema is a neighborhood in West Jerusalem, next to the entrance to the city. It was put under a lockdown as Corona cases in the community and area continue to rise. It was originally built as a Jewish neighborhood between Arab villages. Today most of its inhabitants are Haredim
