News Digest: Hadassah Hospitals on Strike

#0202_A_View_From_East_Jerusalem

"A strike at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital.

The Israel Medical Association informed the director of Hadassah Hospital in Ein Kerem that, following harmful and 'destructive' measures, the hospital would strike from 8 am on Sunday [February 8th, 2019] until further notice. The Maariv newspaper noted, practically, this means that the hospital will act in accordance with work procedures on Saturdays.

The medical association told the paper: 'More than ten doctors who were supposed to begin an internship in the next two months were told that their internship was canceled.'

In a statement sent by Professor Zion Hagai, chairman of the Medical Association, he said that 'the Association's secretariat discussed the sudden and harmful step, in which the acceptance of doctors to Hadassah, including interns who were supposed to begin work in February 2019, was canceled. These doctors planned to start with on a date agreed with them, and now because of your decision [of the director of Hadassah Ein Karem], they will remain in their homes.'"

"Hadassah hospitals’ staff are on strike because they are forbidden from processing new residents so that they can begin working. It’s difficult for the patients, but understandable when the doctors are collapsing under the workload. But what are the elderly, and the pregnant women, to do, when no one informs them that their appointments have been canceled?

Lucky for me, I watched a morning show yesterday (!) (it wasn’t mentioned today) and I understood that my appointment isn’t happening. But what will do all those that don’t follow the news?"

[Selected comments:]

– "Binyamin Netanyahu [Israeli PM] is the address."
– "That’s what you take issue with? As a side note on the news last week, they mentioned that a 39-year-old single doctor from Hadassah committed suicide because of the workload put on him by the system. As a doctor… he couldn’t deal with it ethically…
What do you prefer?
1. An exhausted and impatient, and sometimes hungry doctor because of the amount of work
or
2. A functioning health system, in which you as a patient will receive proper and well-performed examinations that will be followed with treatment from a doctor in good condition…sounds like a ‘for sale’ notice for a doctor."
– "The people to blame are Litzman [Deputy Health Minister], Kahlon [Finance Minister], and first and foremost – Bibi [Binyamin Netanyahu, Israeli PM].
The residents can no longer stand the 36 hour-straight shifts, without a moment’s break, from one patient to the next, while they do their best."
