News Digest: Refugee Week at Hebrew University in Jerusalem

"Look at this video! These are the two most important minutes of your week.

Listen to Monim Haron, a freshman majoring in political science and economics and a refugee from Darfur, who was a political leader back in Sudan and was imprisoned by the State of Israel for three years. It's been five years since he submitted his asylum request, which still remains unanswered.

Today at 12:00 p.m., we're holding a talk with Monim to hear his personal story."
– Otzrim Et HaGerush [1]

"After the university decided to hold 'Refugee Week' and not bring in a single speaker to talk about the life of Southern Tel Aviv residents and their hardships, we wanted to tell you about another university that decided to deal with loneliness.

Our university has been getting worse and worse in the world rankings over the last few years, which makes sense when you deal with everything except for development and research."
– Im Tirtzu Jerusalem – Hebrew University [2]

0202 Editor's Notes:
[1] In response to the Israeli government's decision to deport 38,000 undocumented people, who are mainly from Eritrea and Sudan, a growing movement among students called "Otzrim Et HaGerush," or "Ending the Expulsion," held a week-long series of events, concerning the issues that refugees face, on university campuses all around Israel.
[2] Im Tirtzu is an Israeli NGO dedicated to "Zionist discourse, Zionist thinking and Zionist ideology to ensure the future of the Jewish nation and the State of Israel," as stated in their mission statement. They are lobbyists, as well as running university campus chapters.
