"The Likud branch in Jerusalem continues to fully oppose Minister Zeev Elkin’s struggle for mayor of Jerusalem.[1] In a letter to the Elections Council, a member of the Jerusalem Branch, Ilan Gordo, has written: ’The opposition of our branch is due to Elkin’s political positions that are contrary to the Likud's. [Furthermore, we object to], the aggressive conduct of Minister Elkin in his attempts to undermine the Jerusalem municipal elections as well as the irreversible damage caused by his actions to the Likud movement and the chances of the branch achieving results in the municipal elections in Jerusalem […] [Moreover,] It seems that the only interest behind Elkin's unusual requests is the preservation of the deal that he forged between himself and the current mayor, Mr. Nir Barkat, with whom he has a longstanding acquaintance.’”

0202 Editor’s note:
[1] Ze'ev Elkin is an Israeli Minister and Member of Knesset. He is a member of the Likud party and therefore and has recently announced that he will be running for the position of mayor of Jerusalem in the upcoming municipal elections. The opposition towards his candidacy from his own party is significant.
