“I will not vote for anyone who won’t actively support the Pride Parade in Jerusalem.
This is not an extreme [opinion]; There are people who live here next door to me who wish to murder me because of this Parade and the very fact of my lifestyle. Those who do not remember this and choose to abdicate responsibility are unworthy of leading this city.” [1]
– Daniel Ziv Bukobza
[Selected Comments]:
– “This idealistic attitude is dangerous. Unfortunately, in Jerusalem, we do not have the luxury of choosing only the candidates who declare that they will march. Politics is the ‘art of the possible’, and this is Jerusalem. In the end, you will only stay with the opposition and with the minority.”
– “Ofer [Berkowitz] has been marching for years. Now that it is the election year, he does come forward and state that he will also march this year? What happened? Ofer’s politics of the past are not the same this year…” [2]

0202 Editor’s Note:
[1] A post on Facebook pointed out that of all the candidates running for Mayor in Jerusalem, only one has openly stated that he will march in the upcoming Jerusalem Gay Pride Parade. Since this post, some candidates have responded. Their responses can be read in this previous 0202 post: https://tinyurl.com/yc338ljh
[2] Ofer Berkovitch is head of the Jerusalem 'Hitorerut' party, one of two prominent pluralist parties in the city. Hitorerut (lit. Awakening) is a party in Jerusalem municipal politics based off of principles of pluralism and ensuring residents stay in the city. The party largely represents young and secular residents. Ofer Berkovitch is running for mayor in the upcoming elections.
