“Fire in Me’ah She’arim [1]: Suspected Arson.

The firefighters were called to Me’ah She’arim to extinguish a burning apartment and were attacked by local extremists. According to the investigation, it now appears that this was apparently deliberate arson

Last Sunday, around 21:30, fire rescue teams from the Jerusalem stations were sent to a fire in a building located in Me’ah Sh’earim. The fire fighters who arrived on the scene noticed the burning fire in the apartment, and thick smoke surrounding the entire structure.

The fire fighters entered the burning building, searched for trapped victims, extinguished the flames, prevented the spread of fire to nearby houses, and ventilated the place from the heavy smoke that had accumulated there. After about half an hour, the fire was under control.

An initial investigation by the fire and rescue investigators in Jerusalem shows that the fire apparently began by arson. The conclusion of the investigation will be forwarded to the firefighting and rescue legal department in the Jerusalem District, and to law enforcement authorities.

The firefighters who entered the neighborhood were attacked by extremists who shouted at them, threw stones and blocked the vehicles with garbage dumpsters.”

0202 Editor’s Note:
[1] Me’ah She’arim is one of the oldest Jewish neighborhoods in Jerusalem and was built in the late 19th century. Today, Me’ah She’arim is an insular neighborhood in the heart of Jerusalem populated by Haredi Jews. Me’ah She’arim is also home to the extremist ‘Sikrikim’ and ‘Neturei Karta’ factions who are fiercely anti-Zionist and often oppose the presence of government employees in the neighborhood.
