"Prisons Forbid Hats and Suits
The Israeli Prison Service has recently approved a list of new orders, which includes a prohibition on prisoners from wearing black hats and suits, and Haredi prisoners are outraged. This prohibition directly affects hundreds of religious and Haredi prisoners. Sources claim that the motive was the Prison Service’s worry that the customary religious clothes’ colors will make it easier for prisoners to escape. The inmates are furious, and argue that the law discriminates against them, while others are allowed to dress as they please. 'We weren’t given any convincing argument. They just hit us with this instruction, and that was it. We’re going to fight this illegal prohibition which harms our basic rights,' asserts one anonymous Haredi prisoner. Another added, 'this is an outrage. For years, no one was bothered by us wearing hats and suits to the prison synagogue, and suddenly someone cares.'"
