"Finally authorized: Shmuel HaNavi Junction will be renamed Maran Junction

Deputy Mayor Rabbi Tzvika Cohen and chair of the commission, Deputy Mayor Yael Antebi met a few months ago with Maran [1], the Posek [2] of this generation, Chief Sefardi Rabbi Itzhak Yosef and
reached an agreement to rename the junction after the Rabbi's father, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, may his memory be of protection to us.
The Chief Rabbi debated whether to rename Kablan street, where Maran had lived, 'Rabbi Ovadia Yosef street,' or whether to rename Shmuel HaNavi junction 'Maran Junction.' He finally decided to rename the junction, which is near his grave, after him.

At the end of the meeting, Deputy Mayor Tzvika Cohen said: 'With God's help, during today's meeting, which was chaired by Deputy Mayor Mrs. Antebi, we had the honor of approving the
renaming of the junction after Maran Ovadia Yosef. In the last months, we made efforts to speed up this process at the request of Maran Rabbi Itzhak Yosef and in coordination with Rabbi Aryeh Deri, leader of the Shas party. Soon this process will come to its end with a distinguished inauguration ceremony [of the new name]."

0202 Editor's Notes:
[1] Maran is an honorary title given mainly to great rabbis of Sefardi origin. The word Maran literally means "Our Mister" and some say it is an acronym for "Meah Rabanim Nismach," or "ordinated by
100 rabbis."
[2] Posek is a Jewish clergyman who deals mainly with rulings of Jewish law, or Halacha.
