0202 – Points of View from Jerusalem

“Will the asylum seekers save the draft law?

At the request of PM Netanyahu, Minister Kahlon stated that he will approve the process to circumvent [1] the supreme court ruling on the asylum seekers, thus enabling the government to deport them.

The ultra-Orthodox parties welcomed Kahlon’s decision this evening. The assessment is that they will use this evening’s statement to pressure Minister Kahlon to apply the same law to the draft law. Thus exempting yeshiva students from army service.”

0202 Editors’ Notes:
[1] This is called “Okef Bagatz” which literally means bypassing the supreme court. When the government is dissatisfied with a court ruling, it submits a bill to the Knesset to change the legal situation so that in other cases that will be submitted to the court, the result will be different.
