0202 – Points of View from Jerusalem

#0202_A_View_From_East_Jerusalem

“These notices were hung on one of the doors of Al-Aqsa Mosque overnight by Temple organizations [1]. They ask Palestinian residents of Jerusalem and the Waqf [2] to vacate Al-Aqsa on Friday, March 30, 2018, the day before Passover, so they may perform the Passover sacrificial offering [3].

[Translation of notice:]

To the Muslim residents of Jerusalem,

Asalamu Alaikum [greetings],

RE: The religious obligation of the Jewish people to perform the sacrificial Passover offering

We, the representatives of the Jewish people, turn to you and ask you to leave the area of the Temple Mount [4] before March 30, 2018 by 6:00 a.m. This is so we may fulfill our religious obligation of performing the sacrificial Passover offering at the Temple Mount.

We thank you for your cooperation,

The Jewish People”

0202 Editor’s notes:
[1] Temple organizations are Jewish organizations that advocate for the establishment of the Third Temple in the Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound.
[2] The Islamic Waqf functions as the religious and civil administration of Al-Aqsa Mosque compound. Following the 1967 war in which Israel took control the Old City of Jerusalem, the Israeli government decided to maintain Jordanian custodianship of the Waqf. Today, the Haram al-Sharif is governed and funded jointly by the Jordanian Waqf and the Waqf of the Palestinian Authority.
[3] The Torah mandates Jews to ritually slaughter a lamb on the eve of Passover. During biblical times, the Passover sacrifice was performed annually in the Temple. In modern-day Israel, different organizations wish to reenact this ritual at the Temple Mount. However, the police and courts refuse to permit Passover sacrifice re-enactments on the Temple Mount, saying it could lead to unrest and disruption of public order.
[4] The Temple Mount is the Jewish term that refers to the location of the Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound.
