0202 Editor's Note:
[1] The Waqf (literally, religious endowment) refers to the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf, which essentially functions as the religious and civil administration of the Haram Al-Sharif [Al -Aqsa] complex. Following Salah a-Din's final conquest over Christian forces in the Crusader wars in 1187, some sort of Waqf has governed Haram Al-Sharif. The most recent incarnation of the Waqf was established by Jordan immediately after the 1948 war. After the 1967 war in which Israel took control of the Old City of Jerusalem, the Israeli government decided to maintain Jordanian custodianship of the Waqf. Today, Haram al-Sharif is governed and funded jointly by the Jordanian Waqf and the Waqf of the Palestinian Authority.
