Haredi protest digest

"A week after the passing of Rabbi Shmuel Aeurbach, leader of the Peleg faction, [1] Rabbi Azriel Aeurbach, the leader’s brother, has since joined the newly formed Peleg council of Rabbis. While some members of the movement are planning protests, a recording recently surfaced, indicating some cracks in the group's leadership. In a private conversation with a staff member, Rabbi Azriel is heard saying the following: “I oppose all of these riots, I don’t think it’s good for the boys. It’s clear that I’ve never agreed with Rabbi Shmuel, who had fire burning in his soul.” Rabbi Azriel appears to be worried about the boys being sent to face the police head on: “I was against this from the beginning, I told them that I agreed to protest in front of the prison and learn Torah there, but in the streets? They start to brawl, we don’t need boys fighting the police…” [2]

0202 Editor’s Notes:
[1] A movement of ultra orthodox Jerusalmites that adamantly opposes the draft law and promote draft evasion among "of age" yeshiva students.
[2] The Rabbi has since issued a public statement claiming that his words had been distorted. Regardless, many Haredim remain unconvinced, as the recording can be heard loud and clear.
