"The Jerusalem property tax rebate will be approved

To the delight of families of Yeshiva students [1]: A new property tax deduction in Jerusalem will soon be approved by the municipality, announced Mayor Barkat.

After a long struggle, it appears that Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat will approve the discount program on municipal taxes. This was concluded with city council member Avraham Bezalel from the Shas [2] party.

As a result of the conclusions of a professional committee headed by Interior Minister Aryeh Deri [3], this [new rebate program] was signed off on for immediate implementation. These discounts affect, first of all, tens of thousands of families of yeshiva students, and Deri managed to implement them.

According to the discount chart, those with a salary of up to 5,000 shekels will be entitled to a 20% discount in municipal property tax, where until now it was possible to receive a discount for municipal property tax only up to a salary of 3,700 shekels. This was also dependent on earning up to the level of the income support benefit from the National Insurance Institute, with the addition of fixed rates out of the average in the economy.

This is a very significant step for many families earning around the minimum wage, which are forced to live in poverty and also lose the discount in the municipal property tax. The new discount table will give them an incentive to continue working and earning a living without losing out on the [municipal tax] discount."
