"Haredi Mother Wins Jerusalem Marathon
The thousands of participants in the Jerusalem Marathon rubbed their eyes in disbelief when they saw the first-place winner: Beatie Deutsch, a Haredi woman from Har Nof, Jerusalem.
Beatie (Batya) finished in first place out of the Israeli women, and fifth place out of all women, after having run 42 kilometers in 3:09:48. Beatie is 28 years old and a mother of five. She made Aliyah to Israel from the USA a few years ago. She told Kikar HaShabat: 'I didn’t run for egotistical reasons, but for ‘Beit Daniella’ (a rehabilitation day center for teenagers, using animal therapy), which was started in memory of my cousin. I ran in order to raise awareness for this important organization, which is trying to raise $30,000 for a new building.’ In Beatie’s eyes, ‘It really is a gift from God. He gives us all of our talents and abilities. The feeling was incredible, but what stood out for me personally was that God was with me every step of the way'."
