0202 – Points of View from Jerusalem

Jerusalem Marathon 2018 Digest:

#0202_A_View_from_West_Jerusalem
“A year has passed since that cursed day in which my family’s world changed.
This year, too, I will run the Jerusalem Marathon in memory of my niece Lieutenant ‘Shiraz’ (Shira Tzur, an outstanding female soldier in an officer's course who was murdered in the Armon Hanatziv attack on January 8, 2017). [1] Since Shira's murder, her family has been working to commemorate her memory through the clear blue eyes of Shira who loved challenges and especially love to make people think, create, strive, fulfill…

The way I chose to commemorate Shira is to run the Jerusalem Marathon in order to raise funds for the ‘Shira Foundation’. Keren Shira is a fund that embraces science-loving children from all over the world. This year, Hanukkah will be the first time an international youth competition will be held in Israel on the subject of science and technology entrepreneurship (HAIFA TEENTECH). Shira's spirit will accompany and inspire this competition.”

“Two Palestinians were arrested in Jerusalem. Why? because of violence? terrorism? They were arrested when they left their homes in a vehicle wearing shirts protesting the Jerusalem Marathon. Tell me more about ‘democracy’ in ‘United Jerusalem.’ [2]

0202 Editor’s notes:
[1] Fadi Al-Qanbar carried out a truck-ramming attack on January 8, 2017, in which four officers' school cadets were killed. The attack was carried out in Armon HaNatziv, a neighborhood of Jerusalem which is near the Palestinian town of Jabel Mukaber. For a previous 0202 post about the attack, see: https://goo.gl/JS3RAK
[2] The Jerusalem Marathon has drawn political controversy due to the agenda that marathon champions Jerusalem as a ‘united’ capital of Israel. Some view the ‘united’ Jerusalem agenda as an attempt to strengthen that the Jewish identity of the city and thus disregard the Arab residents of East Jerusalem.
