"Smartphone Smashed following Prayer
Last week a congregant who attended the Ma'ariv [2] prayer at the 'Otzar Hachaim' Beis Medrash [1] led by Rabbi Moshe Tzeddaka in Jerusalem, told the Rabbi that he wanted to break his mobile phone in order to become stronger spiritually [3]. The Rabbi asked his assistant to bring a hammer, and after a few blessings and prayers the owner of the phone smashed his device and threw it in a nearby bin."

0202 Editor’s Notes:
[1] Ma’ariv – ritual evening prayer.
[2] Beis Medrash – a Jewish study hall located in a synagogue, yeshiva, kollel or other building.
[3] In recent years many Haredi religious leaders publicly opposed the use of Internet and smartphones. They are perceived as dangerous tools that can expose the Haredi public to impure ideas and images. Many Rabbis have not only banned the use of smartphones, but encouraged destroying the devices as well.
