"The Grand Mufti warned against the dangerous implications of the transfer of the American embassy to Jerusalem:

The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and Palestine, and the Preacher of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, Sheikh Mohammed Hussein, warned of the inherent danger in the American administration's decision to relocate its embassy to occupied Jerusalem, which will take place on the annual date of the Palestinian Nakba[1]. This shows the arrogance of those who support the Occupation and are intent on causing injustice to the Palestinian people and their holy places, and constitutes a clear attack on the Palestinian issue and an attempt to settle it.

The Mufti stressed in his statement on Sunday that this oppression is illegal and will lead to dangerous consequences for the American administration.

The Mufti clarified that the transfer of the American embassy to Jerusalem, if it happens, would not only be an attack on Palestinians but a clear attack on Arabs and Muslims worldwide. It will also contradict all international conventions and treaties that see Jerusalem as an occupied land, and [this transfer] will not serve peace and security in the region, but will drag it into wars, anarchy and instability.

Sheikh Hussein added that all Jerusalemites, Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims would never surrender to such an attack, but would give up all that was dear to them in order to oppose the American arrogance.

The Grand Mufti praised the courageous decisions and positions of the Palestinian leadership, headed by President Mahmoud Abbas, who is making efforts to oppose this cruel attack on the Palestinian people and their holy places.

He also called on the Arab and Muslim leaders, their peoples, their wise men, their dignitaries and those who seek peace in the world to stand together in order to cancel the American favoritism of the Occupation, which is altering the status quo of the region's security and overall stability."

[1] The Nakba is the Arabic term used for the events and consequences of 1948, called the War of Independence by Israelis. Nakba literally means catastrophe and relates to Palestinian expulsion from their homes and lands during the war between Zionist forces which would become Israel, and the Arab armies including Palestinians and neighboring states.
