0202 – Points of View from Jerusalem

#0202_A_View_From_West_Jerusalem

"Jerusalem mourns the passing of Haim Guri, notable Jerusalemite, Palmach [1] fighter, and a poet of the independence generation, whose songs are deeply rooted in the State of Israel's foundations.

Haim Guri lived in Jerusalem for almost 70 years, created and existed within the city, and we are proud of being able to enjoy his creations that have turned into prized possessions of our people's culture.

In 2002, the city of Jerusalem awarded Guri the Yakir Yerushalayim [2] award due to his contributions to Hebrew literature and poetry and for his contributions to cultural life in Jerusalem. Haim Guri will be missed by many but his works will continue to echo for many generations."

0202 Editors' Notes:
[1] The Palmach, an acronym standing for Plugot Machatz meaning "strike forces," was the combat force of the Haganah, the underground army of the Jewish population in the British Mandate of Palestine.
[2] Yakir Yerushalayim, which translates to Worthy Citizen — or dear one — of Jerusalem, is an annual citizenship prize granted to a select Jerusalemite on Yom Yerushalayim, Jerusalem Day, for contributions to the cultural or educational life of the city.
