0202 – Points of View from Jerusalem

#0202_A_View_from_West_Jerusalem

“Jerusalem is grieving the loss of Haim Guri, a man beloved by Jerusalem, a Palmach fighter [1], poet of the generation of independence whose poems are deeply rooted in the foundations of the State of Israel.

Haim Guri has lived in Jerusalem for almost 70 years, creating and breathing the city. We are proud to have enjoyed his works, which have cultural significance for our nation.

In 2002, Jerusalem awarded Guri the Jerusalem Medal for his contribution to poetry and Hebrew literature and his contribution to cultural life in Jerusalem [2]. Haim Guri will be missed by us all, but his works will continue to resonate for many generations to come.”

0202 Editor’s notes:
[1] Haim Guri joined the pre-state Palmach paramilitary group in 1941, participating in a number of operations against British forces stations in the British Mandated Palestine.
[2] One of Guri’s most famous poems is “Bab el-Wad,” in memory of the soldiers who fell in the Sha’ar Hagai area while fighting to keep the road to blockaded Jerusalem open during the 1948 Independence War.
