“Haredi victory at City Hall: The Apartment for Rent project approved, with added possibility of Sukkah balconies [1].

Two weeks ago, Kikar Hashabat revealed that the ultra-Orthodox Jerusalem City Council members and Shas objected to the Apartment for Rent on Allenby project and removed it from the agenda, due to the inability to build a sukkah off the balconies.

As is well known, every new construction project currently being built for the religious and ultra-Orthodox population in Israel includes a Sukkah balcony off of each apartment. In recent years, however, there has been an increasing demand for balconies among the secular population.

As a result, the project leaders requested that the committee approve such easements for additional construction on the project being built in the Talpiyot neighborhood. The ultra-Orthodox city council members approved the permits for the project, without representation from the secular factions, so that there would be an option to build a kosher sukkah in all the apartments.

Today, members of the Planning and Building Committee approved the project. The opposition was led by council members Yohanan Weizman, Yossi Deitch and Pini Ezra.

In a conversation with Kikar Hashabat, Yohanan Weizman confirmed that the project was approved and said that 'this activity is being closely monitored by the ultra-Orthodox representatives and is thought to be another achievement of the observant public.'”

[1] Sukkah Balcony – Many observant jews design their homes with a porch in such a way that aligns with their Sukka-building needs for the week-long Jewish holiday of Sukkot.
