#0202_A_View_From_West_Jerusalem
"Jerusalem has a siren to signal the beginning of Shabbat. It lasts for a minute or two and is not the most pleasant, but it goes away soon. However, songs make a racket when they go on for 15-20 minutes.
This style, from what we understand, comes from Rav Halperin, who thought that the best way to welcome Shabbat in is joyfully. So, we're not talking joy. We're talking about nuisance, at a loud and horrifying volume, and played on terrible quality speakers with more static than music.
Playing these songs before Shabbat constitutes a desecration of God's name and the creation of a new tradition that has no Jewish legal basis. It's straight up harassment… and this tradition is spreading to other neighborhoods of Jerusalem. Then it will spread to Beit Shemesh, Arad, Ramat Gan, and Tiberias.
To the Environmental Protection Office and Israel Police, feel free to fix this.
