0202 – Points of View from Jerusalem

#0202_A_View_From_West_Jerusalem

"Why are there (almost) no roads in Jerusalem named after women?

During the last meeting of Jerusalem’s road naming committee, we were astonished to discover that of the 16 candidates [to have roads named after them] only one was a woman. Our representative, Yehuda Greenfield-Gilat has decided to organize a list of women’s names to propose to the committee.
In order to do this, we need your help.
Do you have an idea for a suitable candidate? Lets make this happen. Here's what to do:
1. Fill out the application (http://bit.ly/WomenOnMaps)
2. Add supporting documents: biographies, forms, pictures and, most importantly, letters of recommendation. As many as possible.
3. Send all of it to the following email: [email protected]
4. We, the Jerusalemites party, will do our utmost to get the names on Jerusalem’s map!
Waiting for your suggestions!"

[Excerpt from video:]
"[…] Did you know there are more than 1000 streets in Jerusalem named after men and less than 100 streets named after women? It shouldn’t be like this and it’s up to us to change this. Look behind me: 50 – 50, that’s how it should be. […]"

[Selected comments:]
– "Maybe because history was largely made by men? I suppose it's true that political correctness is a war on noticing, and remembering."
– “Hey Yehuda, there are many women who died during the war while protecting Jerusalem. Do you think it’s appropriate to recommend them?”
