What is the story behind the school curriculum in Occupied Jerusalem?
After the annexation of the rest of Jerusalem in 1967, the Occupation took control of [Palestinian] schools and imposed its curriculum on them. In response, a campaign was launched to boycott these schools and open alternatives to them; these alternative schools were known as ‘Hussni Al-Ashhab Schools’. This forced the Occupation to back away from its previous decision to impose its curriculum [onto Palestinians].
Samir Jibreel, director of the Palestinian Education office in Jerusalem: ‘At that instance, Occupation forces were compelled to return to the Arabic, Jordanian curriculum of the time.’
In the year 2000, the Palestinian curriculum replaced the Jordanian curriculum in the schools.
However, in 2011 the Occupation’s municipality and the [Israeli] Ministry of Education redoubled their efforts to impose the Zionist curriculum once again. It was in 2011 that the municipality tried to remove any [Palestinian] nationalist content from school curriculum by omitting and deleting anything related to Palestinian history and Palestinian identity in Jerusalem […]

This is in view of the overall attack on all aspects of life in Jerusalem, including education, which in its essence and content constitutes the compass for the progress and uprising of our authentic Palestinian, Arab and Islamic society.

These curricula constitute a real falsification of history and harm the noble and human customs and values of this great nation. Then wrong is taught instead of right and distort our ancient Islamic and Arab history for generations.

"An article written in collaboration with Lach Yerushalayim, appeared today in Yediot Yerushalayim about the struggle that has recently broken out between the State of Israel's official bodies, and the Israel Broadcasting Authority regarding the form in which East Jerusalem's educational system will take.

'Maor Tzemach, head of the 'Lach Yerushalayim' organization, which calls for the unity and sovereignty of Israel in Jerusalem, said: "The struggle that has broken out between the State of Israel's official bodies, the Ministry of Education and the Jerusalem Municipality, and the Palestinian Authority is one that concerns the sovereignty and unity of Jerusalem. We cannot relinquish claims to issues pertaining to East Jerusalem's education system. The city must deepen its process of developing an alternative education system that will succeed in advancing against the Palestinian Authority's system. I call for the immediate closure of the Central Committee in East Jerusalem.'"
