"The "Peleg" Haredim [1] Abandon Criminally Involved Yeshiva Students
For the past three and a half months, the Peleg boys have been sitting in army prisons under charges of defection. In the past, criminal charges given to Peleg yeshiva boys, led to angry riots across the country. When the wave of arrests began, Peleg members embarked on "fury days", as they called them. Lately, though, the Peleg boys have ceased to initiate such riots. Last Friday, after one young man was sentenced to three months in jail, 'Peleg's newspaper reported the incident as only a minor headline. It seems that Peleg is beginning to sober up from its ideological stance on military evasion and refusal. Moreover, it appears that the movement perceives this battle as a futile one, with the potential to lead topsychological and spiritual crises among the imprisoned young men. Peleg is leaving behind hundreds of defectors who have lost the chance of being considered Yeshiva students, and will now rot in prison. What can the Peleg say to these boys, to whom they've promised falsely that in the case of their arrest, Peleg members will "burn down the country" for them? How can they look into the eyes of these frightened young men that they can do nothing for?"

[1] Peleg Yerushalmi (the Jerusalem Sector) – a minority group in the Haredi-Litvish community, under the leadership of Rabbi Shmuel Aeurbach. Peleg members differ from the main Haredi community in their extremist ideology, especially their refusal for any sort of collaboration with the army, not even to receive an exemption from the army.
