"Council Member to High School Girls: 'Academia is Treif (non-kosher)'

A massive convention was held last Tuesday for more than ten thousand girls from Haredi high schools in Jerusalem. The assembly was aimed against the dangers of academia, and to encourage following the path of 'Bais Ya'akov.'
Rabbi Meir Zvi Bergman, member of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah [1], was the main speaker at the event. He spoke sharply against academic studies for women:
'Academia is treif [2]. If a girl desires a Torah-filled home, academia has the opposite effect. A woman thinks what she views as good thoughts; she sees her husband studying in the Kollel [3] for low wages, and gets a low salary from her own job. She thinks getting an academic degree will raise her salary, thus ensuring that her husband can learn Torah in peace […] The woman considers this as coming from a pure thought. You should know – this is treif! This is an impure thought! The great rabbis of this generation, who prohibited this, see the inevitable result: a home in which the wife learns in academia is a broken home. It will no longer be a Torah home! Remember that!' "

[Selected comments:]
– "He wants to keep the Haredim ignorant and poor, without any money or education. He's looking for impoverished blind people who will do everything they're told."
– "As an insider, I can say: feminism, ultimately leading to strengthening the woman's place by getting academic degrees, can lead to the deteriorationg of the family unit."

0202 Editor's Notes:

[1] Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah – lit., Council of [great] Torah Sages, the supreme rabbinical policy-making council of several related prestigious Haredi intra-national organizations.
[2] Treif – non-kosher, used literally to mean non-kosher food, and metaphorically to convey behaviors or actions that are deemed improper or unacceptable by Rabbinical authorities.
[3] Kollel – an institute for the study of Talmud and other Jewish texts, which acts as a Yeshiva, featuring lectures and learning sessions. The students, mostly married men, get paid a monthly stipend.
